Regarding Thomas, I agree with Scalia when he was asked to compare himself to Thomas, "I might be conservative but I'm not a nut case." I also agree with you that somebody has to be the dimmest person on the Supreme Court and that's not an impeachable offense.

he knew she was pregnant it was premeditated, to be honest he should have received the death penalty, its 5 years later and we are still grieving. hHer life was cut short and so was her unborn child. may she and the baby forever rest in peace. the 5 year aniversary of their death is approaching. and justice still hasnt been served!

Scott, I like your site and the way you write. Thank you! Unlike most bloggers, you have a firm grip on spelling and grammar, and, even, to some degree, on logic - which is heartening. (And no; I don't mean to patronise.) It *does* strike me, however, that you are far too bright to be a theist. You can't say that a god exists because he hasn't been disproved. That just isn't good enough, I'm afraid.

Why don't I make up some bizarre, three-headed god of my own, then? You couldn't disprove *him*, either... If this god was as obvious, omnipotent and real as we're told he is, why are there scores of religions around the world which can't agree upon a basic description? Is he one unit? Is he part of a trinity? Does he take animal form? Does he take pleasure in killing people? Is he peace-loving?

Why is it that, when he "cures" someone of cancer, he is "merciful", yet, when another person, who might be equally - or even more - deserving of life, dies of cancer, it's "part of god's plan"? Talk about covering your bases!

If we have no idea of what form this god takes, or what his modus operandi is (i.e. does he operate alone or through agents such as a messiah), how are we to have the foggiest idea of what his demands are? Of course, we have man-made texts that constantly contradict themselves... And then there's "faith", the useful device which preachers of all religious hues use to stop their followers from asking too many leading questions! It's perhaps no wonder that the "faithful" are biblically referred to as a "flock", as they follow blindly and unthinkingly...

At Ridgeline Middle School in Yelm, Washington, Assistant Principal Barnard yelled at my daughter's friend for hugging her. He said it was a gang sign.

I think there's something wrong with this.

It doesn't matter if he knew she was pregnant or not. Under the Felony Murder doctrine, if you commit a dangerous felony, then you are held liable for any death that results during the comission of that felony. For example, if you are fleeing from a bank robbery in a car, and you accidentally run over a pedestrian, then you just committed felony murder because (1) You were in the comission of a dangerous felony (i.e. the robbery); and (2) you caused a death during the felony. It makes NO DIFFERENCE that you didn't intend to kill the guy. Moreover, you are even liable for felony murder for deaths that results from your co-conspirators! Thus, if you and 3 other guys are robbing a bank, and one of the guys goes crazy and shoots a couple people in the bank, then YOU are held liable for murder even though you never pulled a trigger.

So you might ask, "How does this relate to this story?" Simple. Terence Lawrence committed a dangerous felony when he murdered the pregnant woman. During that murder, he caused the death of another "individual," the unborn child as defined by the Texas Penal Code. It doesn't matter if he delibertly tried to kill the baby or if he had no clue she was pregant. The point is that death resulted to an individual during the course of a dangerous felony. So now he has committed TWO murders (the first degree murder of the mother AND the felony murder of the unborn child). Under Texas law, the murder of more than one person in a single transaction is Capital Murder, punishable by either Death or Life in prison.

So at the end of the day, this guy is screwed.

Like J, I fall to the extreme left in matters political, and still I find this commercial mildly offensive on the basis of its sexist implications; true, men who try to bed women unsafely are pigs, but what about women who try to bed men unsafely? It may be a rarity, but there have certainly been cases in which a woman has lied to or otherwise deceived a man regarding use of contraception in order to trap him with a child he did not consent to fathering. Nonetheless, this miniscule margin of the female population does not represent the whole of the female population by any stretch of the imagination. If a commercial similar to this were to air depicting women in a uniformly "unevolved" light, there would be a massive public uproar over it. So why is it acceptable to depict your cliché "male-chauvinist pig" (again, a fairly tiny margin of the whole) as representative of the entirety of the sex? It's standard Madison Avenue fare—make the target demographic ashamed to be without the product, as though their lives are incomplete or in some other manner subhuman—and it's fundamentally demeaning to men as a sex.

Because a law enforcement officer is working for the government. People innately think that owning a machine that is designed to kill others should be connected to people of privilege. People in government, especially our leaders, deserve more protection than citizens. Also the military is one and the same as the government, and it is the military which protects us as a nation. Therefore it makes sense to want to tie people-with-guns with people-with-bigger-guns and so forth. For instance, you need a gun license, because it's a priveledge to own a machine that is designed to kill others. It means you have more power over life and death, and to be given that power, you ought to be connected to those who higher up ultimately control and persuade the world through their leadership. That is just how the psychology works. You asked and I gave the correct answer, so i don't want to hear someone else comment with how unamerican I am or how I need to move to Korea. Also, besides just the psychology of it, a law enforcement agent is more likely to be in contact with others who know how to use a gun and who are carrying them for a purpose that can be revoked by their superiors. A Common citizen may just be carrying a gun for any reason he pleases and if he uses it poorly then he cannot lose his job exactly for this reason in the same way that the law enforcer can, plus he doesn't belong to an agency which may get bad press and be shamed for the conduct of one of their poor officers.

I also spent several years wasting my time reading about conspiracy theories. How did Building 7 fall since it didn't sustain any substantial damage, how could the BBC report on it before it happened if they didn't know in advance, etc. But now I think about this and I wonder why I even cared in the first place. Whoever did it, they are criminals and should be prosecuted as mass-murderers. What else could they be? Whether they're Jewish-Americans, Israelis, Muslims or what, I don't see what the racial, ethnic or spiritual identity matters. A criminal should just be found out, through a process of detection and police work, and then tried in a court, and if found guilty then he should be punished for whatever the sentence reads. In the case of the people who were principally responsible for 9/11 -- death. But other than this, that a terrible crime was committed, I do not get the political and social significance of that day. The Al Queda group, whoever they are, supposedly they're waging a war on the west and America, but how can they stand a chance when we've got nuclear bombs, space weapons, biological and chemical warfare, etc? I don't understand what there is to fear. Yes, a handful of them could occasionally blow up crowded sections of our major cities, but who wants to live in a city anyway? Jerks usually. I don't personally feel much fear in regard to terrorists even on the rare occasion that I get on a plane. I figure it's just statistically unlikely, like dying at Six Flags, getting eaten by a shark, etc.

I live in the south, in georgia, and I never really cared that so many strangers up north were killed. I tried to care though. The TV said to care. I'm supposed to care. But who were those people even? I don't even know people who knew others who died that day. I've never really understood why it was so important. I thought the Iraq War was going to turn into a big event, too, but it turned out to be nothing. All the media does is promote a bunch of crap that never really amounts to anything.
